What is Podcasting or Podcast?
Podcasting is a spanking new online media delivery format. Using podcasts one can broadcast multimedia files - audio or video - over the Internet for playback on mobile devices (ex. MP3 players) and personal computers. The term podcasting derives its name from Apple's iPod, but to create a podcast or even to listen to one, you don't need to own an iPod, or any portable music player for that matter.
A podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to and downloaded automatically, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom. Since people can subscribe to this feed by submitting the feed address to an aggregator, new episodes become available in the podcast and they will be automatically downloaded to that user's computer. Unlike radio or streaming content on the web, podcasts are not real-time. The material is pre-recorded and users can check out the material at their leisure, offline.
